Introduction

Playlists are a powerful way to help fans discover and organize music that they love. We built Playlists with Artist control as the top priority: your music should appear in playlists only if you want it to and be previewed by listeners pre-purchase only as much as you are comfortable with. This is a difficult balance; there’s a need to weigh ease of use against control. We think we landed in a good place.

The purpose of playlists

Playlists on Ampwall exist as a way to help Artists get their music in front of more people. Much like Ampwall’s track streaming, this is a promotional tool. Ampwall is not a streaming service, so while we do want the experience of listening online to be good, ultimately the goal is to help fans find music and artists that they want to support.

For Artists

As an artist on Ampwall, you have complete control over what tracks can or cannot be included in playlists, and how often they can be listened to before requiring a purchase.

Artist Playlist Default

On the “page settings” page for your artists, you will see a new menu on the right side, near the middle, just below tags. This is the playlist default setting for all tracks, present and future, that you share on Ampwall.

Track level controls

If you select “Include” or “Exclude” on the Playlist Default Setting, you will now see this checkbox on all tracks, “Allow fans to include track in playlists”. This determines whether or not that track is allowed to be in a playlist.

Playback Limits

Another new setting is Playback limits. This limits the number of times a fan can listen to a song before we bother them to purchase it. Our bothering method is both visual and audible so it really grabs peoples attention: when a user hits the limit you set, we skip the track after about 10 seconds and show a pop-up that lets them quickly purchase the release the track is from, or move on. Every subsequent listen will have this experience, they will not be able to hear the track again until they purchase. This works for both logged in users and anonymous ones. However, anonymous users will need to create an account to claim ownership and continue listening.

For Fans

Making a playlist

There are multiple ways to make playlists on Ampwall, the easiest being right where you add tracks to playlists. You should see this icon in several new places throughout the UI, on the album page next to tracks time or lyrics, or on the pop-up player in the same spot.
